Abstract

Based on the results of several recent studies, this text highlights the existence of substantial tension between the functions of instruction and socialization in the practices of Quebec teachers at the primary level. The article advances that this tension leads to minimizing the importance of transmitting knowledge to students and to over-valuing the function of socialization. However, teachers appear to view this function of socialization from the standpoint of a therapeutic process, which raises a number of questions about such an orientation with respect to both aims and ethics.
