Abstract

Guatemala es el país más indio de América y el único de América Central cuya población es mayoritariamente india (más de cuatro millones de personas* de un total de 7.5 millones de habitantes). Los indios (en Guatemala llamados “indígenas” o naturales”) son esencialmente campesinos, peones agrícolas, comerciantes, artesanos, soldados ...; desde hace unas décadas, algunos han tenido acceso a empleos en la administración, la enseñanza, las iglesias, etc, sin que hayan renunciado por ello a su identidad india. Pero ya se trate del gobierno, del ámbito económico, del ejército o del sector religioso nunca alcanzan puestos dirigentes.
