Abstract
This article describes musical cultures linked to 572 videos uploaded to YouTube by residents of three small Mexican communities with international migration in the states of Sinaloa, Querétaro and Zacatecas. The approach to musical cultures is carried out by means of content analysis and a classification system built through “musical cultural matrices” proposed here. Thanks to both instruments we can answer questions concerning the main types of music played in the videos and the matrices to which they belong. The article also questions about the relationship between music and migration, and the role played by YouTube and other online social networks in the construction of international migrants’ identity and culture. Finally, the article wonders about the meaning of the hegemony of the musical cultures “rural-urban” matrix over the three examined populations. In all cases, authors will retain the moral rights established by law and they will yield the right of first publication of their article to the journal.
